New for 2018 – OK Walkers – Lets get walking group

Our new walking group is now planning walks for 2018. In 2017 our walk leaders Barbara, Carolyn and Sandie undertook First Aid Training so that they are well prepared should there be any issues on the walks – Well Done Ladies and Penny will be joining them soon.

Our first walk is on the 19th February and will be meeting at 10.45 at the Cumberland Centre for an 11am start walking to Devils Point and back, with a cuppa and chat in the cafe afterwards if you would like to join us.

On 19th March we will be meeting at Park Pavillion Cafe at 10.45 for 11am start for a walk around Devonport and Mount Wise.

We welcome well behaved dogs on leads and the walk will take place come rain or shine.

Below are some of the photos taken at previous walks…..

It all started with a discussion about mental health and art…..

We then started to think about how we could make the Mental Health Arts Festival interactive and we came up with knitting…

We asked people to knit 8″ squares …thinking we would get maybe 50 or 60 squares

The following pictures are from the groups that joined us with the knitting challenge.

The Opportunity Knocks Knitters and the other groups that joined us managed to knit over 900 squares…this was massive..

We then had to decide what to do with the squares and how to show the people of Plymouth what we had been doing.

It started with yarn bombing the Roland Lavinski Building during the Arts Festival on 2nd October.

Then we wanted to go bigger and better with all 900+ squares and decided to yarn bomb Smeaton’s Tower…..

What is Timebanking?

          •  Do you have some time on your hands?
          •  Would you like to help others?
          •  Would you like to get something in return?
          •  Do you enjoy your community and want to be more involved?
          •  Are you new to the area?
          • Do you need help with tasks in daily life but can’t get help from other sources?

If you have answered ‘Yes’ to any of these questions then Timebanking could be for you…

What can be swapped? Through Timebanking you can swap time on gardening, cooking, baking cakes, simple DIY, languages, computer skills, dog walking, driving, sewing, knitting, card making, photography, or even playing a musical instrument. The list is endless…if you have a skill you want to share you simply have to let us know.

How does it work?

You take part in the Timebank by giving and receiving time. For each hour that you help someone out, you earn one Time Credit. Your Time Credits go on your Timebank record, which you can then use for receiving help from someone else. One hour is swapped for one hour regardless of what is being done. So the more you do, the more you can have done for you and you don’t have to swap with the same person.

To be part of the Timebank simply download and complete the project joining form and the interest form which can be downloaded here and return them by post to: Opportunity Knocks Project Colebrook (South West) Ltd Unit 37 HQ Building 237 Union Street Plymouth PL1 3HQ or email them to

What happens next?

Once we receive your forms, we will meet with you to give you more information and to take up two references. Then we’ll link you up with other Timebank members and you can start taking part.

If you are part of an organisation that would like to be involved in Timebanking, please use this form and return it to the address above. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Helen Fellows on 01752 211243.
